How I Think About Community

Most companies focus on the channel. Slack, Discord, forums, gamification. I focus on the people.

A community doesn’t exist for optics or engagement metrics. It exists so users can feel connected to a brand and feel like their voice matters.

You don’t launch a community and expect it to be full of active contributors. Most people observe before they participate. That’s normal. The goal is not to force engagement, it is to design an environment that makes participation feel meaningful when it happens.

The strongest communities start intentionally. You identify high alignment users, often your likely future champions, and build early depth with them. From there, the signal attracts others. You can keep open invites so people can join, find value, and eventually create value.

  • Exclusivity creates gravity.
  • Structure creates trust.
  • Trust creates advocacy.
